In a significant step toward improving local security, M’mbelwa District Council in Mzimba has officially handed over the newly constructed Kapopo Police Unit to the Malawi Police Service. The facility, built for K167 million with funding from the Governance to Enable Service Delivery (GESD) initiative, is expected to play a vital role in curbing crime in the area.
Speaking at the event, Group Village Headman Kapopo Mhlanga welcomed the development, expressing optimism that the police unit will greatly enhance safety and peace in the surrounding communities.
“Today marks a new beginning. With the establishment of this unit, we hope to see a drastic reduction in crime, and people will now feel safe to go about their daily lives,” said Mhlanga.
Deputy Commissioner of Police for the Northern Region, Glinton Mitayi, noted that the area has historically been plagued by high rates of murder, theft, and sexual violence. He expressed hope that the new facility would empower officers to respond more efficiently to security challenges.
“This police unit will not only bring law enforcement closer to the people, but also act as a deterrent to crime. We are committed to ensuring it operates effectively to serve the people of Kapopo and surrounding areas,” Mitayi said.
Council Chairperson for M’mbelwa District Council, Morgan Tembo, lamented the persistent killings and insecurity in the region, describing them as a source of fear and trauma for residents.
“The pain that communities here have endured due to violent crimes cannot be ignored. We call upon residents to work hand in hand with law enforcers and protect this vital infrastructure,” Tembo said.
His sentiments were echoed by the Officer-in-Charge of Jenda Police Station, Deputy Commissioner Greadwick Mangazi, who appealed to the community to take ownership of the facility.
“Let us guard against vandalism and the destruction of these police structures. They are here for your benefit,” Mangazi urged.
Mzimba District has three police jurisdictions (police districts ) in line with the Malawi Police structure Mzimba, Jenda, and Kafukule Police Stations.
The project is part of broader efforts under the GESD program aimed at strengthening service delivery at the local level and promoting community development.
