Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Central Region Chairperson Patrick Zebron Chilondola has strongly condemned the recent wave of political violence, calling for immediate investigations into attacks on citizens protesting against the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).

Speaking to local media, Chilondola expressed deep concern over the violent disruptions during protests in Lilongwe, as well as earlier incidents involving MCP members in Machinga, Blantyre’s Shoprite and Mbowe area, and Ndirande.

In Lilongwe, demonstrators were reportedly assaulted by machete-wielding groups, with vehicles torched in escalating chaos. MCP has come under fire, accused of hiring thugs to break up the protests.

“This is unacceptable. There must be accountability,” Chilondola said. “We cannot afford to jeopardize peace and democratic integrity as we approach the September 16 elections.”

While distancing the ruling party from the violence, Chilondola defended MCP’s record, calling it Malawi’s best hope for stability and progress.

He highlighted achievements under President Lazarus Chakwera, including infrastructure projects, rail network revitalization, and steps toward fertilizer self-sufficiency.

Chilondola acknowledged the country’s economic challenges—like currency depreciation and inflation—but blamed “decades of mismanagement” after MCP’s 1994 exit from power.

“When we left government, the Kwacha was at K4 to the dollar,” he said. “It was the administrations that followed that led us here. We are now working to fix it.”

He also emphasized MCP’s internal unity and contrasted it with the “confused and fragmented” opposition, particularly the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

“Malawians are more aware than ever. They know who created the mess—and who is trying to clean it up,” he said, expressing confidence ahead of the 2025 elections.

Chilondola closed by urging all citizens to reject violence and uphold democratic values as the nation prepares for a pivotal vote.
