Police in Lilongwe have arrested a 34-year-old man, Gift Kachama, for allegedly stealing K12 million in cash from his employer in Area 9 on June 18, 2025.

According to Lilongwe Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Khumbo Sanyiwa, the incident occurred in the morning hours after Kachama was assigned to wash his boss’s car. During the task, he reportedly discovered the money and decided to take it.

After stealing the cash, the suspect allegedly proceeded to church, where law enforcers arrested him following a prompt report by the employer.

Initially, Kachama denied the theft and accused his cousin of being behind it. However, after further questioning, he admitted to the crime and led officers to a maize garden where he had hidden part of the stolen money in a plastic bag.

According to Sergeant Sanyiwa, police managed to recover only K2.5 million out of the reported K12 million, adding that investigations are ongoing to trace the remaining amount.

Kachama, who comes from Mambozi Village, Traditional Authority Chitukula in Lilongwe District, is expected to appear in court soon to answer a charge of theft.
