The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has revoked the membership of three affiliate associations at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Salima district.
Delegates overwhelmingly supported a proposal to remove the National Football Youth Association, National Football Coaches Association, and National Referees Association from FAM’s list of voting members.
This means the three bodies will no longer vote in future FAM elections.
The motion was brought forward by Northern Region Football Association, Chairperson Masiya Nyasulu. He argued the associations were duplicating roles already handled by FAM’s internal structures.
FAM President Fleetwood Haiya backed the decision, calling it part of ongoing reforms aligned with FIFA’s governance standards.
“This is not about removing them from football,” said Haiya. “It’s about helping them operate more effectively outside FAM’s political structure.”
Haiya said the associations will now act as professional partners, not political affiliates.
“They will report directly to the FAM executive. This change will help us support their work better—especially in youth development, coaching, and refereeing,” he said.
Haiya also pointed out that political interference had previously limited their effectiveness.
He cited issues like underfunded youth programs and referees being blocked from international duties due to governance conflicts.
“FIFA and CAF rules prohibit referees from holding political roles. This move keeps them eligible for international appointments,” he explained.
Not everyone is on board. National Football Coaches Association Chairperson, Aubrey Nankhuni strongly opposed the decision, saying it sidelines key stakeholders.
Despite criticism, FAM insists the changes are needed to streamline governance and improve professionalism across Malawi football.
