Charles Petro’s journey from local club football in Malawi to European leagues is one of perseverance and passion. In Malawi, football is revered. It’s the dream of many to be able to make it out of club level and make it on the international stage. In recent years two of the newest Malawian stars made their way to Europe. Both Charles Petro and Peter Banda headed out to see if they could succeed in the European club world. And the hopes of Malawians everywhere were pinned on them with the hopes that they would make their way to some of the top Premier League teams. It’s something that no Malawian has yet achieved, so the hopes were pinned on these two young men.
Hard times ahead
However, it’s not easy heading out abroad. After just two seasons Banda was already on a flight home to Malawi. There were likely many reasons for this including dealing with the weather, culture shock, and the massive language barrier — the last being the usual stumbling block for many a Malawian headed out on a similar trajectory. However, Charles Petro has hung on.

Since his move to Europe, Petro, the utility player, has kept his Europe dreams alive. After moving in 2021, Petro has moved to Romania. At this point, he is now the only recognisable Malawian player in Europe. As the country hoped though, he is staying and fighting for his career and getting a starting place, even though all of this is taking place after some difficult circumstances. Petro has had to adapt to various roles on the pitch, constantly shifting between positions as needed. Luckily, this player has accepted that it’s going to be hard and that nothing would come easily when in Europe.
How it all started
Petro has played for a variety of different teams as he has risen through the ranks of Malawian football. When he returned to the Flames, Petro was an essential component in the resulting draw against Burundi. Not only that, but he was hugely helpful in the win against Burkina Faso in the last qualifiers for AFCON. But since then, time has been hard in Europe. He’s learnt to embrace all the challenges, while aiming to play at the highest level.
Originally, Petro was signed for FC Sheriff Tiraspol which is part of the Moldova Super League. Another Malawian, Francisco Madinga had already been signed for Dila Gori in neighbouring Georgia. These moves were supposed to be the start of big dreams and success. However, not long after, Madinga left too leaving Petro the solo Malawian. Since then, Petro has moved from Moldova to Romania. Importantly, the move is to an elite league team, FC Botoșani where he had a three-year contract taking him to 2023. The contract was extended, and currently Petro is still playing for the team.
But even then it’s not been easy. The team is not as successful as it could or should be. And Petro may not have had as much game time as he might like. For many of the recent wins in 2025, Petro has been on the bench, which is not ideal. As a team, Botoșani are simply not doing well in the Super Liga either, an event that can be found on Bet Malawi. Currently, they are near the bottom of the table, which is not a great place to be.
Playing for Malawi
Despite playing abroad, it’s not stopping the Flames new coach, Kalisto Pasuwa from calling Petro up to be a key player in the World Cup qualifiers. With the Flames playing against Namibia, the team will need all the help it can get. Other Malawian players are in Europe too, but many of them can’t make it for eligibility issues or simply just a lack of interest. However, for Petro, another opportunity to aim for the big stage is of the utmost importance. If Malawi can go further in the qualifiers for the World Cup, maybe he will be seen on the international stage.
Whatever happens, Petro can’t afford to give up just now. If he can adapt to a life in Europe, then he might be able to achieve his dream of playing in the English Premier League. If any Malawian player can make history, Charles Petro may just be the one to do it.
