The organisers of the annual Mount Mulanje Porters’ Race have announced that this year’s event will take place on 12 July 2025 at the iconic Likhubula Valley, with hundreds of local and international athletes expected to participate.

Confirming the development, Jimmy Maloya, Communications Officer for the organising committee, said preparations are in full swing and registration is already underway.

“In this year’s edition, we are expecting more than 500 athletes to join us,” Maloya said in an interview. “Participants will tackle a demanding 25-kilometre trail from Chambe Plateau to Lichenya Plateau and back to Likhubula, while those in the Fun Run will cover 10 kilometres.”

He added that the organisers have set the event’s budget at K55 million and are engaging the corporate world for sponsorship to ensure a successful and memorable race.

Last year’s edition drew around 350 runners, and organisers are expecting the number to grow this year, given the inclusion of foreign athletes and growing interest from the public.

The Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA) remains the main sponsor of the event, which is more than just a race, it is also a fundraiser for the conservation of Mount Mulanje, one of Malawi’s most treasured natural assets.
