A coalition of over 100 female independent candidates, operating under the banner Independent Women Aspirants, has launched an appeal for financial support totalling K500 million in preparation for Malawi’s tripartite elections scheduled for September 16, 2025.

At a press briefing, Pilirani Buleya, Coordinator of Independent Women Aspirants, highlighted the challenges faced by female candidates, particularly the limited backing they receive from political parties.

This funding drive aims to bridge the resource gap and enable women aspirants to mount competitive campaigns for parliamentary and council seats.

“The group was formed to empower independent women candidates, foster strong networks, share common challenges, and mobilise resources,” said Buleya. “Due to growing cases of limited support from political parties, many women are now contesting as independent candidates. We recognise the critical role women play in sustainable development and human rights advocacy in their constituencies.”

The funds will be used to cover essential campaign expenses such as registration fees, campaign materials, transportation, and communication costs. To raise the required amount, Independent Women Aspirants plan to organise various fundraising activities, including dinners, awareness walks, and sporting events.

Buleya emphasised the need for broad-based support from individuals, organisations, and stakeholders to achieve their objectives. “This initiative is not only about fundraising but also about shifting mindsets to invest meaningfully in women’s leadership ahead of the 2025 elections,” she stated.

The fundraising campaign aligns with Malawi’s Vision 2063 framework, specifically targeting Enabler 1, which advocates for mindset change, and Enabler 5, which promotes human capital development and gender equality.

In addition to financial donations, the group welcomes in-kind contributions such as campaign regalia, stationery, vehicle hire, and airtime.

“We call on well-wishers across the country to join hands in supporting independent women aspirants. Their participation is vital to ensuring inclusive and representative governance in Malawi,” Buleya concluded.
