In the wake of reports that the Chilima family is planning a memorial service in his home district of Ntcheu, President Lazarus Chakwera has instructed the government to host a national memorial for former Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima and eight others who tragically died in a plane crash at Nthungwa, Nkhatabay.
Minister of Information Moses Kunkuyu made the announcement during a press briefing in Lilongwe, stating that the government will on 10 June, 2025 hold a solemn ceremony in partnership with bereaved families to ensure a dignified tribute.
“This is a moment for the country to come together in remembrance,” Kunkuyu said. “The lives of the departed will always be cherished and honoured.”
As part of the commemoration, interdenominational prayers will be held at the crash site. Religious leaders from various faiths are expected to lead the service, offering solace to the nation.
Kunkuyu further clarified that they are aware that some families may hold their own private memorials, and this official event is intended to support and complement those efforts.
The ill-fated flight, carrying the then–Vice President and eight others on official business, disappeared before being discovered crashed in the hilly terrain of Nthungwa. The tragedy sparked national mourning, and tributes have since poured in from citizens across Malawi and international leaders.
