Premier Bet Malawi has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting minority sports in the country through the sponsorship of competitive events, with the latest being a K3.9 million weightlifting tournament held in Mzuzu.

The event saw Johnathan Nandolo crowned champion in the men’s category after lifting a total of 870 kilograms, earning himself a grand prize of K700,000. He was followed by Kelvin Mbewe, who managed 740 kilograms and took home K500,000, while Shadrach Amos placed third with 715 kilograms, receiving K250,000.

In the women’s division, Sibongile Tembo dominated the competition by lifting 630 kilograms, claiming the top spot and K700,000. Emmie came second with 615 kilograms, pocketing K500,000, and Tapona Mgala secured third place with a lift of 375 kilograms, earning K250,000.

Speaking during the prize presentation, Premier Bet Malawi Retail Manager for the North, Veston Kambalame, said the company is dedicated to supporting lesser-known sports across the country.

“We believe in giving opportunities to athletes in minority sports like weightlifting, which often go unnoticed. This is part of our broader commitment to sports development in Malawi,” Kambalame said.

Champion Johnathan Nandolo expressed gratitude for the platform and support.

“It feels amazing to win. Competitions like these motivate us to train harder and improve. I thank Premier Bet for recognizing our efforts,” he said.

Women’s winner Sibongile Tembo echoed similar sentiments.

“This win means a lot. It shows that women can also excel in strength sports. I hope this inspires more young girls to join,” Tembo said.
