Zomba Chingale MP appeals for humanitarian assistance following stormy rains

Member of Parliament for Zomba Chingale, Lonnie Phiri is appealing for emergency humanitarian assistance after stormy rains destroyed houses in her constituency.

Phiri told Malawi24 that people in Zomba Chingale are displaced due to the rains and lost food.

“Children are failing to go to school because their clothes and notebooks have been destroyed,” she added.

The parliamentarian has since appealed to Department of Disaster  Management Affairs,  private sector and humanitarian agencies to respond to the plight of the people in Zomba Chingale by providing tents for shelter and other basic requirements

Disaster Management Officer for Zomba Council, Walusungu Mwafulirwa, said his office is aware of the stormy rains at Chingale area and that the office has written Department of Disaster Management Affairs on the issue.

He added that other areas in Zomba are equally affected by the stormy rains such that number of affected households has gone up to 565 translating to 2,888 people affected.

Group Village heads Masaula, Mbukwite, Balamanja and Namwiyo at Zomba Chingale have also been affected.

Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services announced two months ago that many parts of Zomba District will receive rains accompanied by storm that will trigger river flooding.
