The drama surrounding the Miss Malawi Beauty Pageant was not only with the choice, Malawi24 understands. According to our sources, the former Crown holder was barred from the stage for being inappropriately dressed.

Sources have disclosed that organisers barred former Miss Malawi, Tionge Munthali, from crowning her successor.

“There was a lot going behind the scenes,” said the source. “They ditched tradition altogether. Tionge was there and ready to pass on the crown.”

Another source said that the organisers said her dress was not modest enough to appear before the first lady.

“There was a lot of control because the event had the Malawi first lady [Monica Chakwera] as the main guest. State house had much to say,” the source said.

A photo of the former Queen has been trending on the Internet showing her in a strapless dress with a split running to the thigh.

Jessica Jescar Mponda has been crowned Miss Malawi, beating a dozen of other contestant. However, patrons booed the organisers and were accused of rigging the contest.
