Man arrested over pangolin in Kawale

Police at Kawale in Lilongwe are keeping in custody 42-year-old Alick Phiri for allegedly being found in possession of a live pangolin.

Kawale Police Station Publicist Sub Inspector Mabvuto Phiri said the suspect was arrested during the evening of Monday at Nathenje and has since been charged with illegal possession of specimen of listed species and government trophies contrary to section 110(b) of National Parks and Wildlife Act.

He added that the police station detectives were tipped by members of the public that the said suspect had in his possession and was offering for sale the prohibited animal in Kawale.

“Following the information, Kawale detectives posed themselves as potential buyers and after found the live Pangolin in a sack bag,” he explained.

The suspect will appear before court after the completion of paperwork. The law enforcers have since commended members of the public for their support in the fight against wildlife crime in the area.

Phiri hails from Nanthuko Village in Traditional Authority Chadza in Lilongwe District.
