Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) says it is is investigating the actual cause of a system failure that led to a nationwide blackout this morning.

ESCOM’s system shut down suddenly at 11:44 this morning, causing power outage all over Malawi.

In a statement, ESCOM has said it still investigating the actual cause of the system failure.

“However, preliminary findings show that a technical problem caused the system shutdown,” reads part of the statement from ESCOM.

System shutdowns causing nationwide blackouts have occurred several times this year, including in August when a nationwide blackout lasted 12 hours.

Malawi is also experiencing low electricity supply following damage at Kapichira Power Plant. Due to the damage, ESCOM customers do not have power for at least six hours per day.

The Lazarus Chakwera administration promised Malawians that these daily blackouts will end in December this year.
