Malawi Vice President Saulos Chilima arrested on corruption charges

Vice President Saulos Chilima cancelled his scheduled attendance at the Gonamupanya Cultural Festival in Rumphi today following his arrest for alleged K290 million corruption yesterday.

It was expected that Chilima would attend the festival together with President Lazarus Chakwera.

However, Chilima was arrested yesterday by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for allegedly receiving K290 million from United Kingdom based corruption suspect Zuneth Sattar.  Chilima was charged with six counts related to corruption and faces 12 years in prison.

The arrest appears to have forced Chilima to skip the Gonapamuhanya Annual Cultural Festival at Bolero, Rumphi District which was held the theme – “Developing Education, Good practices, Togetherness, Peace and Ending Corruption and Bribery”

Writing on Facebook after the event, President Chakwera said the theme is both timely and critical for it addresses contemporary social gaps that need rectifying to build a better Malawi.

“I have reiterated my stand that cultural heritage and diversity are tools with which we must develop this country. An inclusively wealthy and self-reliant nation will at best be the outcome of joint efforts of people from all tribes and ethnicities.

“My administration will continue championing policies that will promote cultural expression and unity among all Malawians,” said Chakwera.
