Boat carrying 21 people goes missing on Lake Malawi

MV Ubale has gone missing on Lake Malawi between Likoma Island and Nkhatabay.

The boat left Likoma on Friday afternoo with 21 people on board.

The owner of the boat, Shadreck Mpata, has told Zodiak Online that MV Ubale set sail at 12:30 pm from Likoma Island for Nkhatabay with people on board and cargo.

“Some of passengers have reached shore in Nkhatabay swimming today. But there is no confirmed account of what may have happened to the boat and others,” Zodiak Online has reported.

Likoma police Officer-in-Charge, Hannah Mponda, has told Zodiak that a rescue team, which includes marines from the Malawi Defence Force, has been deployed to rescue the passengers.
