The Labour Ward at Bwaila Hospital in Lilongwe City has been closed today due to a lack of medical supplies.

Reports indicate that the hospital has no gloves, cotton and drugs, making it difficult for health workers to assist pregant women due for delivery.

“Labour Ward and Theatre temporarily closed,” said a notice posted at the hospital. “We don’t have necessary medical supplies,” reads another.

Meanwhile, the hospital, which receives expectant women from several hospitals in Lilongwe and surrounding districts, is referring expectant women to Kamuzu Central Hospital, one of the biggest referral hospitals in the country.

This is coming at a time President Lazarus Chakwera is being accused of wasting public funds through local and foreign trips.

Today, Chakwera is in Blantyre opening a school and this weekend he will travel to Egypt to attend a climate summit.

Yesterday, Leader of Opposition Kondwani Nankhumwa asked Chakwera to cancel the trip to Egypt in order to save funds and to focus on dealing with the challenges Malawi is facing.
