Former President Joyce Banda will represent President Lazarus Chakwera at the funeral of Kenya’s former president Mwai Kibaki, who died last week at the age of 90.

Chakwera has delegated Banda to represent him at the funeral.

Banda ruled Malawi from 2012 to 2014, a period when Kibaki was also Kenya’s leader.

Kibaki visited Malawi during that period and the two leaders launched the Lilongwe West Bypass Road.

Speaking to the local media, Banda said she feels honored with the delegation and she described Kibaki as a distinguished economist and true son of Africa who transformed Kenya’s road and rail transport system.

Kibaki led Kenya from 2002 to 2013.

He died on April 21 and his funeral will take place in the national stadium in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi on Friday.

He will be buried on Saturday in his hometown of Othaya in the Nyeri highlands.
