Member of Parliament for Ntchisi North Constituency Jacquiline Chikuta and Member of Parliament for Zomba Changalume Constituency John Chikalimba have died today.
Malawi Parliament has confirmed the deaths of the two legislators.
Chikuta of the Malawi Congress Party has passed away today, 27th January 2021 at Mtengowanthenga Hospital in Mponela where she was undergoing treatment.
Chikalimba has also passed away today at Zomba Central Hospital in Zomba where he was receiving treatment.
Chikalimba was one of Malawi’s veteran politicians and in Parliament he was leader of the People’s Party which is one of the parties under the ruling Tonse Alliance.
Chairperson for Zomba district council Baster Chirwa Chirwa said the late Chikalimba told him that he was Covid-19 positive on Monday
Chirwa added that the council and entire nation has lost a very dedicated and productive citizen.
The council chair said they will remember Chikalimba as an advisor and parent when it comes to implementation of development based on his experience as a long serving Member of Parliament.
“The council will remember Ho. Chikalimba for his dedication and experience when it comes to implementation of development projects both at district and constituency level,” said Chirwa.
Chirwa who is also the ward councillor for Nswaswa ward in the same constituency described late Chikalimba as a good leader who always accommodated councillors and development committees on all projects including Constituency Development Fund(CDF).
Late Chikalimba first served as Member of Parliament for Zomba Changalume from 2004-2009. He also won elections in 2014 and 2019 respectively.
Burial arrangement for the two legislators are expected to communicated later.
The deaths of the two legislators on the same day comes weeks after Malawi also lost two ministers on the same day. Minister of Transport Sidik Mia and Local Government Minister Lingson Belekenyama died on January 12 after testing positive for Coronavirus.
