Catholic University donates relief items to Cyclone Idai victims

Catholic University of Malawi (Cunima) has donated relief items to people in Phalombe who were hit by floods two months ago.

Among the donated K12 million items are blankets, maize flour, soya flour, soap, mosquito nets, cooking oil and solar lamps.

Registrar for Cunima Francis Nkhoma, said since they teach their students about helping the needy they thought of sourcing funds to help the cyclone idai victims and to go with the students to the event which in the area of Senior Chief Chiwalo on Friday.

“As Malawians we have to be concerned with the suffering of our friends and at Catholic University of Malawi we teach our students the concept of preferential option for the poor hence we came here to help our friends who were hit the heavy rains here in Phalombe,” he told Malawi24 in an interview.

Nkhoma added by asking other well-wishers to come in and help these victims since they are facing a lot of challenges which came due to the disaster.

In his remarks, Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) desk officer in the district, Davie Chibani, thanked the Chiradzulu based institution for the support saying this will help in alleviating some of the problems that these people are facing.

“As Phalombe district council we are thankful to Catholic University of Malawi for this support, You can see that they have brought food, blankets and even they have brought water guard to help in water and sanitation hygiene as you know this is also one of the cholera prone areas, he said.

Chibani concluded by saying that the victims are lacking materials to use in building up their shelters in their respective areas. He then pleaded to individuals and companies who can help to come in quickly.
