Police arrest tea plucker over coworker’s murder

Bvumbwe police is keeping in custody a 21-year-old tea plucker at Makandi Tea Estate in connection to the killing of a fellow worker.

The suspect Chipiliro Kampini Machira was arrested last week over the murder of Ellaton Bandawe aged 48.

Limbe Police Deputy Public  Relations Officer Widson  Nhlane  said police received a report from one of the estate’s security guards Omex Chikwapulo that the victim left his home village of Mapondo at around 03:30 hours April 30.

“After cycling a distance of three kilometres he was attacked by unknown person who also robbed him of his bicycle,” Nhlane said.

Bandawe became unconscious with multiple head wounds and was taken to Thyolo district hospital where they referred him to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre.

In the same morning hours of April 30, Ellaton Bandawe died whilst receiving treatment at the health facility.

Postmortem results, showed that he died due to severe head injuries.

Following investigations, Bvumbwe CID officers arrested Chipiliro Machira and Bandawe’s bicycle was recovered in the process.

Chipiliro comes Mapondo village in Traditional Authority Chimaliro in Thyolo district and is facing the charge of murder.
