Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has called for the arrest of Homeland Security Minister Nicholas Dausi following revelations that he set a Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) warehouse on fire in 2014.

Vice President Saulos Chilima revealed last week that Dausi was behind the fire which damaged the MEC warehouse weeks after the disputed 2014 elections.

Kunkuyu made the call

Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, MCP director of campaign Moses Kunkuyu said Dausi should be prosecuted.

He noted the MCP demanded a recount after the 2014 elections because the party suspected that the polls were rigged.

“Memories are still fresh of vote recount demands that parties, including MCP, made that time. The DPP, which had President Peter Mutharika and his vice Dr Chilima on a ballot, vehemently turned down such calls, further raising eyebrows by well-meaning Malawians,” he said.

Kunkuyu then demanded more information from Chilima on what transpired during the disputed polls adding that it is possible that the Democratic Progressive Party circumvented the wishes of Malawians and the same may be repeated in this months’ elections

He said: “There are already fears of vote rigging fuelled by Dr. Chilima and his boss President Mutharika as they continue accusing each other on this. It is, surely, the wish of any sane citizen that the coming polls be fair, credible and free from violence,” he said.
