Seasoned golfers, James Chimwaza and Shelon Marques, made history when they became the first individuals to win the first ever Mdina Engineering and Business Solutions golf tournament held at Blantyre Sports Club on Saturday.

Chimwaza, who is still enjoying podium experience, emerged men’s winner with 64 net.

“I am delighted to win because the competition was tough. I enjoyed the game and we want to encourage Mdina and others to continue supporting the sport,” he said.

Furkani Gani also underlined his  ruthlessness after collecting 66 net to finish as a runner-up while Medson Kalambule ended on third position with 68 net.

Marques did not disappoint either in ladies category after finishing with 73 net to win the title.

“I came here to relax and have fun with my colleagues after I recently participated in Malawi Open. From this win I can only aim to improve my handicap,” he said.

Well-known golfer, Diana Kambale was also in an outstanding form when she ended on second position with 74.
This was the first time that South Africa based entrepreneur Tiwone Mdina had sponsored a golf tournament.

Mdina runs engineering and business solutions companies and he sponsored the tournament after injecting over K1.5 million.

The company’s representative Jeka Chipofya said the tournament provided them with an opportunity to interact with different players of the economy.

“However, it has surpassed our expectations we never thought we will have a lot of golfers. Even the organisation was great. Of course it was once off sponsorship and we might take a break from sponsoring sporting activities for sometime,” he said.

Blantyre Sports Club Golf Section Captain, Keta Mulwafu, said it was a successful tournament after a field of 76 players took part.

“This is really a success because Mdina is not a traditional sponsor of golf but the tournament pulled good of golfers. Of course about 83 registered but 76 showed up,” he said.
