Association of Draughts in Malawi ADMA on Saturday elected new office bearers at its Annual General Meeting held in Mzuzu.

On presidency, John Mathews Gabriel Ngwenya won with 29 votes beating Yohane Ngawaya who got 2 votes and Joseph Chiwaula who got one vote.

Richard Manda beat Tony Stambuli by 20 votes against 13 votes on vice president position.

Suzgo Nkhoma has defended his position as General Secretary by 30 votes against 3 votes for Samson Nyirenda.

In his acceptance speech, Ngwenya said he wants to promote the game of draught and encourage youth and women to play it.

“First of all, I am happy after winning the election today, and my duty is to encourage youth in schools to play draught and not forgetting women who at the moment are shy to join the sport due to lack of resources such as places where the game can be played,” he said.

Ngwenya added that he wants to ensure that government starts recognizing the sport.

In a separate interview, Henry Melaka who is Administration Manager at Sports Council said he was impressed with the way ADMA is conducting its games.

“I just want to encourage them to be submitting reports so that they can be recognized,” said Melaka.

This is the second AGM since the Association was formed some 10 years ago.
