Former Malawi President Joyce Banda carries the Presidential Jet she is accused of dubiously disposing off in her handbag.

According to a member of the Vice President Saulos Chilima’s UTM, George Saonda, Banda did not actually sell or batter the jet but she has it in her handbag which she is always seen with.

In a video clip from a rally in Dedza that was attended by Presidential candidate Chilima, Saonda claimed that Banda is left to roam the country with the jet in her handbag while petty thieves are locked away.

Saonda was taking a swipe at the alliance between the opposition Malawi Congress Party which they have founded with Banda’s former ruling Peoples’ Party (PP) in an effort to unseat the DPP led government.

“That woman walks around with our Presidential jet in her handbag,” said Saonda casting JB as a morally crooked person.

“All of the cashgaters have now united under the MCP, Gwengwe (Sosten) is there and there is that man from the North who walks around in big jackets as if they are blouses,” said Saonda hinting at Khumbo Kachali who was Banda’s vice President in her brief period as a President.

Kachali has endorsed MCP’s Lazarus Chakwera for the Presidency.

Critics have faulted the UTM for being obsessed with personal attacks although they had promised that they would do new politics. In its early days, Chilima cautioned an executive member of the party for mudslinging MCP leader Lazarus Chakwera.

However, he did not make any comments on the remarks that Saonda made in Dedza.

Saonda who is contesting for a Parliamentary seat in Dedza is well known for an acidic tongue. Before getting the podium at UTM, he was with the DPP where in the run-up to the 2014 elections he used the slogan ‘Sesa Joyce Sesa’ to throw casual insults at Joyce Banda.
