Lake Malawi swallows teenager

An 18-year-old boy identified as Dan Kyoma has died after drowning in Lake Malawi at Chimatiro fishing dock in Mangochi.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of Thursday when Kyoma went to swim along with his younger brother and a friend.

Deputy Public Relations Officer for Mangochi Police Station Sub Inspector Amina Tepani Daudi said the three went into the waters using the deceased father’s canoe.

Daudi said when they reached at a deep point, Kyoma disembarked from the canoe and jumped into the water in order to swim.

“Unfortunately he was immediately swept away by a heavy storm and disappeared. His fellows alerted fishermen who searched for him but to no avail,” Daudi said.

The following afternoon he was found floating by some fishermen.

The matter was reported at Koche Police Unit who visited the scene of incident and post-mortem conducted at Mangochi district hospital showed that he died due to suffocation.

Dan Kyoma hailed from Ntanga village in the area of Traditional Authority Chimwala in Mangochi.
