A statue of late Malawi president Bingu wa Mutharika erected at Parliament Building in Lilongwe will be unveiled soon.
Minister of Information and Communications Technology Henry Mussa said this after pictures shared on social media yesterday showed that construction works for the statue are set to be completed.
Mussa told the local media that preparations for the unveiling ceremony are already underway and the Office of President and Cabinet will release more information about the event.
A memorial for the late president will also be held on the day of the ceremony.
Construction works for the K120 million statue started last month.
The statue is being erected closer to the main entrance at Parliament Building.
Mussa last month justified the decision to erect the statue within Parliament premises saying the late Bingu transformed Malawi.
“It’s justifiable to mount it around parliament precincts, as this is symbol of honour to late Professor Bingu wa Mutharika for the unprecedented infrastructure development the country gained because of his bold decision to shift Malawi’s diplomatic ties from Taiwan to Beijing in 2007,” said Mussa.
The Malawi Government hired renowned South African sculptor Jean Doyle to create the statue.
