Police in Phalombe district are keeping in custody a 36 year old woman for sexually abusing a 14 year old girl.

The suspect has been identified as Chrissy Sitima who hails from Msikita village in the area of traditional authority Kaduya in the district.

According to the public relations officer for the Police in the district, Innocent Moses, the case occurred between 10th and 13th February this year in the stated village.

He said the suspect met the victim around 7 PM on her way with her two friends to buy bananas at a nearby trading centre where she convinced the victim that someone was looking for her.

“She told the victim that someone was looking for her so she took her to her house and according to the victim she says the suspect told her that she wanted her to be her lover.

“The victim said that the suspect had been doing some sexual acts on her body all the time she had been there,” Moses told Malawi24.

The law enforcers’ publicist added that parents of the girl reported that their child was missing for three days which made the community and the police to start looking for her.

Later, after investigating thoroughly the victim was found at the suspect’s house on the valentine day’s eve where the police arrested the accused and was taken for questioning and thereafter took the child to the hospital for medical examination.

According to Moses, the examination done by medical personnel revealed that indeed there were some sexual acts done on the body of the girl.

The woman was charged with indecent assault of a child which is contrary to section 137 (A) of the penal code which attracts sentence of not less than seven years if found guilty.

Appearing before the First Grade Magistrate Damson Banda on Thursday last week, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge levelled against her.

Meanwhile, case has been adjourned to this coming Thursday for further hearing where the state is expected to parade its witnesses who will testify against the woman.
