One die in minibus accident

A male passenger died when a Toyota Hiace minibus overturned several times on the Lilongwe Salima road in Dowa district.

The accident occurred on 19 February, 2019 at Nsungwi area near Mvera trading centre in the district.

According to Dowa police station publicist Sergeant Richard Mwakayoka Kaponda, the driver of the minibus registration number DA 8805, Mr. Lonjezo Tembo, 24, of Chatsika village in the area of Traditional Authority Maganga in Salima district, was driving from the direction of Lilongwe going to Salima with sixteen (16) passengers on board.

Kaponda said upon reaching Nsungwi area near Mvera trading centre, the driver lost control due to speeding and the minibus overturned several times.

The male passenger died while on his way to the Dowa District Hospital due to head injuries.

Other passengers namely: Dorothy Kalungulu, 44, of Misi village, T/A Msakambewa in Dowa and Mateyu Gilbert, 34, of Mtembe village, T/A Chiwere in Dowa district sustained serious injuries and are receiving treatment at Dowa District Hospital.

However, one of the survivors of the accident, Mr. Mateyu Gilbert told Malawi News Agency (Mana) while on his bed at the Dowa District Hospital that the minibus overturned five times due to speeding as it was running away from traffic police officers.
