It’s a symbol of honour – Govt

Construction works for the K120 million statue of late president Bingu wa Mutharika have started at Malawi Parliament in Lilongwe.

The statue will be erected closer to the main entrance at Parliament Building.

Contractor already on the site

According to presidential spokesperson Mgeme Kalilani, President Peter Mutharika is aware of the progress of the works.

“The Bingu statue project started sometime back and His Excellency the President was fully appraised about it and he is aware of its progress,” said Kalilani.

Earlier this month, President Peter Mutharika visited the site of the statue which is expected to cost K120 million.

Meanwhile, Minister of Communication Henry Mussa has justified the decision to erect the statue within Parliament premises saying the late Bingu transformed Malawi.

“It’s justifiable to mount it around parliament precincts, as this is symbol of honour to late Professor Bingu wa Mutharika for the unprecedented infrastructure development the country gained because of his bold decision to shift Malawi’s diplomatic ties from Taiwan to Beijing in 2007,” said Mussa.

The Malawi Government hired renowned South African sculptor Jean Doyle to create the statue.

Bingu’s statue will be like the one constructed for late president Hastings Kamuzu Banda which was also sculpted by Doyle.
