Red Cross workers steal relief items worth K26m

Two Malawi Red Cross Society workers have been picked by Police in Blantyre for stealing relief items meant for people affected by floods in the country.

This is according to Blantyre police Public Relations Officer, Sub-Inspector Augustus Nkhwazi who has identified the two as warehouse clerk McDonald Chitimbe and Lyson Offman, a watchman.

Nkhwazi said George Mwimaniwa who is project manager at Malawi Red Cross reported to police that relief items valued at Mk26,744,500 were missing from the organisations’ warehouse in Blantyre.

Mwimaniwa further told police that the items were meant to be distributed to families affected by floods in the country

He added that the theft occurred between the months of October and December 2018.

The items include kitchen sets, shelter tool kits, tarpaulins, gumboots and hinges.

Acting on the report, police ventured into investigations resulting in the arrest of the two workers at the organisation.

Meanwhile, the two have confessed to have been behind the theft.

McDonald Chitimbe, 33, hails from Kadaya village T/A Kapichi in Thyolo district whereas Lyson Offman, 44, comes from Chisumphi village T/A Ndamera in Nsanje.

They will appear in court soon to answer charges of theft by servant.
