Mzuzu City Deputy Mayor Alexander Mwakikunga who withdrew from UTM primary elections last week says he will stand on an independent ticket.

The party held a rerun of the botched January 3 primary elections held on Thursday and Njikho amassed 566 votes against his challenger Justice Chimaliro who got 250.

Mwakikunga who contested in the first primaries did not participate in the rerun.

He says he will contest as independent candidate in the May 21 tripartite elections.

Mwakikunga won as a Councillor on a Malawi Congress Party ticket in 214. He dumped the opposition party last year to join UTM.

Meanwhile, social commentator Emily Mkamanga says politicians who keep dumping parties lose trust since voters believe such politicians are after money.

“How can people who voted for such politicians trust them with the behaviour they are showing? Moving from one party to another is not a solution as the politicians are lacking something, which is the heart to develop their area,” she said.
