Forty police officers who are part of Vice President Saulos Chilima’s security detail have obtained an injunction stopping the Inspector General of Police Rodney Jose from commencing disciplinary proceedings against them.

High Court Judge Hilary Potani granted the court order to the law enforcers yesterday.

In 2018, the Malawi Police Service withdrew the 40 guards from the vice president’s office and redeployed them to various police stations across the country. The move left Chilima with seven security guards for two official residences at Area 12 in Lilongwe and Mudi House in Blantyre as well as his office at Capital Hill and his motorcade.

However, the police officers continued working as Chilima’s guards after the vice president obtained a court order stopping government from cutting his security detail.

But this week the police told the 40 law enforcers to appear for a disciplinary hearing today accusing them of absconding work.

This forced the officers to obtain an injunction to suspend the disciplinary hearing.

“The disciplinary proceedings against the interested applicants are hereby stayed and or suspended and the respondent is hereby directed to take all necessary steps to ensure that the disciplinary proceedings against the interested applicants are stayed and or suspended forthwith,” says the court order.

Meanwhile, government has also withdrawn a Toyota Cruiser registration MP 209 which the vice president was using.

According to published reports, three police officers seized keys of the vehicle from the driver at Area 30 in Lilongwe at around 5AM on Tuesday.

National Police spokesperson James Kadadzera told the local media that the seizure of the vehicle does not breach any law.

DPP and their senior managers are running scared of the elections in May and will do anything to defeat Chilima.
