Parliamentarian Jessie Kabwila has won UTM primary elections in Salima North West constituency.

Kabwila’s contender Moses Buwa withdrew from the race after failing to pay the K50, 000 nomination fee for the polls.

The elections were supposed to be conducted on 3 January but were postponed to allow Kabwila participate.

The parliamentarian joined UTM in December after dumping the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) where the party’s officials blocked her from participating in primary elections for the constituency.

After joining UTM, she told Malawi24 that the party has the capability of winning in the forthcoming tripartite elections and she will also retain her seat.

“Come 2019 tripartite elections, I am going to amass all the votes and win. I and people of this area we have agreed to join UTM as this is the only way to continue transforming the area,” she said.
