Devotion: Train and exercise

Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.”

Training is very important in the things of God as it is also important in whatever we do in life. Train yourself How to do certain things in life.

For example, train yourself in keeping time for prayer and in praying for longer time. Train yourself to give more money than previously. Train yourself to keep time for Church. Train yourself  how to talk or even how to relate with the bretheren and so on.

Train yourself how to exercise your faith. Train yourself how to love. Train yourself how to forgive. Train yourself how to live in joy always. Train yourself how to respect others. Train yourself how to love God and not the world.

Train yourself to live a holy and pure life. Train yourself in  all good things. Its not automatic that you will do them. It comes from training. You may start as a child with imperfections but as you train, you will be perfected.

1 Timothy 4:7-8 “But refuse profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness. For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.”

Those who do body building understand that it is never done within a day. They exercise continuously and are disciplined to build their bodies. Sometimes they wake up at specific times of the day and give themselves targets to achieve. They choose specific food to eat and specific drinks to take in order to build their bodies. Eventually they have what they want. Although body exercise is important, the scripture above says that spiritual exercise is better than it.

In spiritual building, we also exercise. We discipline ourselves in the Word, we set targets to achieve, waking up at specific times to do some specific spiritual exercises such as prayer and fasting. We eat  food of the Word. We choose what to do and what not to do. We restrain ourselves from doing certain things even though there is a chance to do them. Eventually we get the desired results.
