First Lady Gertrude Mutharika has described violence against women and girls (VAWG) as an evil that Malawi must urgently overcome.

Mutharika made the reamarks on Thursday 6 December when she presided over the launch of an OXFAM led Ending Violence against Women and Girls (EVAWG) initiative in Mchinji.

The Campaign is aimed at mobilising communities and victims of Gender Based Violence to speak out and report perpetrators in order to end the malpractice.

The First Lady said VAWG shutters dreams and the future of its victims.

She urged all victims of abuse especially women and girls and communities to report any form of violence to stop the vice.

She said silence in the face of abuse provides fertile ground for violence against women to thrive.

The first lady also appealed for more support towards institutions and services that supports victims of abuse to improve their services.

Before launching the campaign, the First Lady toured Kamwendo Police Unit to appreciate services provided by the unit’s Victim Support Unit (VSU) where she pledged to donate a computer, beds and mattresses among other needs.
