Police arrest 10 minibus touts

Nineteen people, including ten minibus touts, were netted in a sweeping operation conducted by Blantyre Police on Tuesday.

Confirming the development to Malawi24 was Blantyre police public relations officer, Sub-Inspector Augustus Nkhwazi who said the operation was conducted in the commercial city’s Mibawa minibus terminal and Blantyre market.

Sub Inspector Nkhwazi further said the exercise was aimed at bringing sanity and enhancing safety and security.

He added that of those arrested, ten have been charged with touting, five with idle and disorderly while four others were arrested for selling liquor without licenses.

He identified the four as Misheck Nasikanyenga of Mbemba village T/A Nsomba in Blantyre, Patrick Jafari of Nsomba village T/A Mabuka in Mulanje, Stephano Kachingwe 26 of Mulelemba T/A Nkhulambe, Phalombe and Ronald Masala of Lakatika village T/A Kuntaja in Blantyre.

Nkhwazi further said that the suspects will be taken before court soon to answer their respective charges.

The publicist continued by assuring the public that Blantyre Police will continue to carry out such operations to ensure that there is order and peace for people living, working or conducting businesses in the city.

“Our appeal to residents is that they should continue working hand in hand with the police and support the initiatives being employed to enhance security.” said Nkhwazi.

He concluded by saying that it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure safety and security in all the country’s cities hence need for support from the general public.
