Police on Saturday stormed a wedding in Lilongwe where they arrested four people for dancing and stepping on bank notes.

The four were arrested at Maziko Garden within Area 47 in the city.

Police say the operation was part of efforts to protect bank currency.

The four have been identified as Fabiano Kachepa aged 30, Lumbani Nyasulu aged 36, Dastain Maluwaya aged 63 years and 25-year-old Makalani Elisa.

According to Central Region Police Assistant Public Relations Officer Patrick Kasauka, police officers were deployed at the wedding to observe handling of bank notes.

The four attendees were then seen dancing and stepping on banknotes, damaging the notes in the process.

Officers instantly arrested the suspects and charged them with wilfully defacing, soiling or damaging bank currency in line with Section 23(2) (c) of the Reserve Bank Act.

“This comes amid several calls from Reserve Bank warning people to avoid the tendency of stepping on banknotes during weddings, bridal showers and all other celebrations.

“Currently the Reserve Bank of Malawi is rolling out the campaign to arrest any person found violating this law,” Kasauka said.

Meanwhile, the suspects are on police bail, and they will be taken to court once preparations are completed.

The Police have since warned all people to exercise decency when offering money at any event to avoid being victims of this law.
