Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Kondwani Nankhumwa has said that Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration is keen to see good roads in cities.

Nankhumwa made the remarks after officially opening Namalaka Bridge in Zomba which has been constructed with funds from Infrastructural Development Fund (IDF).

According to the minister, Malawi Government through the leadership of President Peter Mutharika is committed to making sure that there is a good network of roads in cities that are sustainable and have streetlights for easy mobility.

In the past decade, four bridges have been constructed at Namalaka and each time the bridge kept on being washed away by flood water.

On the newly constructed bridge, Nankhumwa expressed confidence that it will stand for a long time.

“I am happy to learn that the bridge has this time around been constructed with a special design, to withstand any volume of water. This gives us hope that this bridge is durable and is going to be there for a long time,” he said.

Nankhumwa also inspected other projects in the city and attended a sweeping exercise campaign in commemoration of World Habitat Day and World Cities Day that is championed by UN-Habitat in collaboration with its Members States under the theme “Municipal Solid Waste Management.”

“I also had privilege of inspecting other projects that were wholly funded by Malawi Government. These include roads that are being extended and new road projects.

“I also appreciated the most talked about solar powered street lights, though in daylight. A special mention should also go to the management for the decision that was made, to install solar powered street lights. Congratulations [to Zomba] for being the first council in Malawi to install solar lights, and for being able to protect them,” he said.
