Government has forced Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) board chairperson Eric Chapola to quit his position.

Chapola, a brother to Former First Lady Callista Mutharika, has left the post after Secretary to the Treasury (ST) Ben Botolo told him to leave.

Chapola: told to resign

The Nico Life Insurance chief executive officer confirmed to the local media that he was asked to step down.

“It is true I have resigned from the position of MRA board chairperson. I was asked to resign… No reasons were given for the decision,” he said.

Published reports show that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government wanted Chapola out of MRA because his sister left the DPP and joined Vice President Saulos Chilima’s United Transformation Movement (UTM) where she started castigating President Peter Mutharika.

A few weeks ago, government also fired Mutharika from her position as presidential adviser on safe motherhood

However, Botolo denied telling Chapola to quit while Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development Goodall Gondwe suggested that Chapola was uncomfortable working with the DPP government.

“He is a brother to Callista so maybe he is not emotionally comfortable to work with us [DPP administration]. But he was hardworking. We started to pick up good figures [in terms of tax revenue],” Gondwe said.
