Mike Butao unfazed by those eyeing his Wanderers seat

Be Forward Wanderers general secretary Mike Butao says he feels motivated to protect his position at the forthcoming executive committee elections for fear of leaving the club in the hands of clueless people.

Wanderers go to the polls on 25 March with all but two of the current executive committee members seeking re-election.

Butao: I have done a lot for the club.

Butao’s predecessor David Kanyenda and former judiciary spokesperson Mlenga Mvula have thrown their hats in the ring to face him head on.

But the soft-spoken Butao is unfazed by the challenge owing to what he has achieved in the past four years.

“As Mike Butao, there is a lot that I have done for the club and a lot more that I want to see happen at Wanderers. I see  some of  the aspirants out there, as people who want to take the club backwards, and I would not be happy to see the club sliding back after all we have done in the past four years to take it this far,” said Butao.

He went further to underline the huge responsibility that comes with his position.

“Some of these aspirants are good at mere rhetoric, thinking my role is more like a spokesperson. They don’t know that a general secretary is the chief executive officer of the club, responsible for the day to day operations of this institution, so let them do the talking,” he said.

On future projects, Butao unveiled plans to build a stadium with support from the club’s sponsors.

“Previously we had 8 sponsors, but from this year, the number of sponsors has shot to around 20, all from Japan, and most of them have been earmarked for the stadium project. We are also trying to bring our sponsors, Be Forward Japan, to open an office here because sometimes it’s quite inconvenient when the sponsors are thousands of miles away,” he said

Should that be achieved, Butao further disclosed that most of the club’s commercialization efforts will run under the umbrella of the local office.

  1. But Mighty Wanderers executive ‘STOP!’ buying players without proper purpose. You r killing some talented youths & mid seniors due to the insatiable character of desiring to bring each & every blossing talent to Lali Luban. You r killing other teams as well hence degrading competetiveness of the local league. Remember we need only 1st 11 to start each match.

Dont be mistaken Am & have ever been a ‘Mighty Wanderers Supporter & Fan’

You r not a national team & but a sponsored FC with foreign assistance. Remember u dont have IGAs (Income Generating Activities) to sustain the bloated star studded squad since the budget is limited always. Even a Nation’s budget has shortfalls. Plz release the players now that r not in your 2018 season plans so that they join teams of their choice to keep in shape & to map yheir future. Dont be selfish rather inhumane!. It’s their future, it’s their career dont kill it. Am speaking this as a concerned supporter, fan, sportsman & a freelancer adviser. Plz take heed of the free advice

  3. Mike Butao has my vote of confidence since ain’t an eligible voter as these Club elections are concerned. But for me Butao has done a better job compared to many former GSz of the ‘Mighty Wanderers FC’ and I can’t wait to see him victorious for a second term as the Mighty team’s GS. The Club is progressing well and they just need to continue to manage the players’ egos which I feel now they have pumped some sense in the players with the player-discipline saga just subsiding. Discipline is paramount in every setup. Go Mike! Go! I pray that u be successful in the coming elections by God Almighty’s Grace.
Not that other GS post aspirants are bad, but I for one can’t experiment now as it is visible that there is great transformation, transparency & accountability at the club hence ascending continuity is certain.
Your cordial relationship with your fellow executive colleagues/ trustees & other stakeholders is enviable & leaves a lot more guessing hence fails to penetrate to disturb
