Cholera kills two in LL

Cholera has killed two more people in Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe.

Ministry of Health and Population has confirmed the death of the two people which takes the total number of people who have been killed by cholera to 12.

According to Ministry of Health spokesperson Joshua Malango, 10 new cholera cases have also been recorded in 3 districts across the country and some patients are still admitted in hospitals.

“On 21st February, 2018, 10 new cholera cases were reported from 3 districts; 3 in Lilongwe, 2 in Salima and 5 in Karonga.”

“23 cholera patients are still admitted at the treatment centres in Lilongwe, Rumphi, Salima and Karonga. Cumulatively, 570 cases have been reported in the 13 affected districts with 12 deaths,” Malango said.

Malawi Government and international organisations are working tirelessly to curb the disease.

To curb the disease, government has been sensitising communities on sanitation and has also started administering cholera vaccine.

Recently, the Ministry of Health claimed that efforts to fight the disease are being hindered by superstitions.

Malango told the local media that some people believe the disease can be healed by taking herbs while others take long to go to the hospital after noticing signs of the disease.
