President Peter Mutharika’s term is expiring in May.
According to the electoral calendar that the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has released, elections will be conducted on 21 May 2019 effectively signaling the end of Mutharika’s first term.
According to the constitution, until a new leader is sworn in then the incumbent keeps holding office.
Traditionally, a winner is announced a day or two after elections and is usually sworn in the next day.
Mutharika has however indicated that he will seek another term in 2019.
If Mutharika wins, then he will be sworn in for his second and last term. However if he loses then his term will expire in May 2019.
Meanwhile parties have already started campaigning with the race for the top seat poised between the ruling Democratic Progressive Party and the opposition Malawi Congress Party.
