Too early to predict 2019 elections outcome – Analyst

A political analyst has said it is too early to predict the winner of the 2019 presidential elections.

The analyst Wonderful Mkhutche was reacting to a report by UK based Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) which has tipped President Peter Mutharika and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to win the elections over main contender Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

According to Mkhutche, 2019 is very far and a lot of events can happen in Malawi politics.

“The elections are over a year from now. A lot may happen that will change the direction of politics and who will assume power.” Mkhutche told Malawi24.

Mkhutche also advised the DPP not relax based on the findings.

“Not taking anything away from the ruling DPP, but the party should not find political comfort in what EIU has established.

“There is more to Malawi politics than surveys and it needs to concentrate on that. It is in government and is even stronger to be granted another mandate. But it should concentrate on the voters, first and foremost,” Mkhutche told Malawi24.

According to the EIU report, Mutharika’s popularity in the populous Southern Region will see him getting re-elected regardless of whether the electoral system used in the polls is the current one or the 50+1 percent system.

“Amending the electoral process so that the presidential candidates have to win an absolute majority may happen, but even if it does, we still expect Mr Mutharika, who has announced his intentions to stand for re-election, to win,” says the report.
