Be Forward Wanderers have postponed the club’s main executive committee (exco) elections  scheduled for next month to allow the committee enough time to prepare the team for the upcoming Confederation of African Football (CAF) assignment.

The Wanderers Board of trustees on Monday confirmed the dates for the supporters and executive committee elections as 4 and 25 February respectively.

But a day later, the Board reversed its stand citing the club’s CAF engagement as a demanding task for the committee which needs no disruption.

However, the supporters’ polls will proceed as earlier arranged.

When asked for comment on the matter, the Board’s Vice Chairperson James Chuma referred this reporter to the club’s general secretary Mike Butao who confirmed the upshot.

“Several people have voiced their concerns on the same, so when the trustees and the exco met, it was resolved to defer the elections to a later date because they might have a disruptive influence on the team’s CAF preparations. The exco is currently negotiating the CAF sponsorship and preparing the team for the competition, so bringing the two together could be self-destructive on our part,” said Butao on behalf of the trustees.

He went further to say: “For now we will only have the supporters’ elections, while for the exco, it will probably be after our CAF duty. We will hear from the trustees on that but be assured that the elections will happen,” added Butao.

The Nomads play AS Vita of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in the first preliminary round of Africa’s premier club competition.

The first leg is in the DRC on 11 February while the return match will be in Blantyre two weeks later.

Gift Mkandawire is the interim leader of the exco after taking over from George Chamangwana who died last year while the supporters committee is led by Tyson Bonongwe.

Bonongwe who was second vice chair upon the elections in 2016, replaced Yamikani Kaliyapa who was ousted last year for alleged misappropriation of funds.

The Wanderers constitution provides for a two year term of office for the two committees.
