A woman on Wednesday morning delivered a baby in a drain after nurses chased her from labour ward at Phalombe District Health Centre.

According to information gathered by Malawi24, the woman was told to leave the maternity room and she later delivered in the drain with the help of some patients who were waiting to get medical help.

The mother of the victim Belita Monomalah Mulosowa said in an interview that when she approached one of the nurses that her daughter was having labour pains and she was in need of assistance the nurse insulted her and told her to help herself since she is an adult.

“When I told one of the nurses that my child was in great pain she told me that I am a mature person and I know what to do in such situations so she refused to help me,” said Mulosowa.

She added that when she wanted to go where her daughter was she found that the baby was already born.

Some elderly patients had helped the woman deliver the baby and they had also cleaned up the baby and the mother.

They then used a local method in cutting the umbilical cord.

Mulosowa further said the nurses then took the baby after the women threatened that they would report them to authorities for their negligence.

When asked to comment on the matter, Phalombe District Health Office spokesperson Daniel Chiromo admitted that indeed the incident happened but he was quick to say that it was because of lack of space in the labour ward.

“She was told to wait outside since she wasn’t showing signs and the labour ward was congested, but it is indeed true that she delivered in the drain,” said Chiromo.

Many women around the facility for a long time now have been complaining about maltreatment from the nurses in the labour room.

Some women complained that sometimes nurses put on headphones while on duty and insult patients when approached for help.

    1. nursing is supposed to be a calling idiot, not just because you want to feed your family therefore grabbing the nearest available job, that’s the problem, and whether enafe tinalakwapo or not is irreverent, those nurses are wicked and they have done wrong, period. bootylickers!

    2. even in other proffessionals we do respect our clayants but this nursing proffessional one wonders whats going on yet its the heart of the government

  6. Akaberekela panjira, kumunda, kwa Azamba simulembapo bwanji? Poti aberekera mu drain ku Chipatala ikhale khani? Mind you labour occurs differently and you can’t judge on the outcome relating to Nurses. Nurses are doing recommendable work but no any praise. They spend there night with your relatives in the hospital while you are at your home or at a drinking joint but the Nurse will never be appreciated for the work S/he does. Very Sorry

  20. DOCTORING OR NURSING Its not a career but its supposed to be a calling .I am very wondering seeing other nurses and doctors treating patients as if as they are dogs not thy human beings yet we are all Malawians and after the one I’ll treated in these public hospital’s are also tax payers.pliz you Government when you employing this people scageone special though treatment to this kind of I’ll treated nurses and doctors in our hospitals

    1. Thus not true!! Each and every work has its own career goal. If you see somebody treat pple very wrong on position she/he is, shall know that that person is go on wrong profesional training. Which means that her/ his career goal has leaved and they doing such position for reason behind. You that the departiment of health has money. So, this nurse she is their for money not for career. Take an example, the preisets and the sisters for the Catholic they serve their work without commanding money. Thus their own career and they vow to do so. Please my fellow Malawian lets deal with departiment we need to go dont do something for peer presure.

  21. This mess must must end,not sooner,,most of our young nurses hv experienced the sour of labour,,thas y most women dies durin or afta labour, they r not concernd at all, u encourag women 2 deliver at hospitals,hw cum 4 the innocent soul 2 be treated like that?,,,,timaona ngt ndinu oyenera kupulumusa miyoyo yathu,km mpomw mukuonjezr imfa ya azimai ku chipatala,we r tired of these,,,ngt chnthu china sichichitika mwachang,,,,china chichtika,

  23. This is the result of taking up a career which is contrary to ur interests n wishes. Taking up nursing or any medical job has to be a calling. The minister must take an action against these nurses.

  24. This has to stop….if you’re in the Field of nursing for money then you’re doing it for all the wrong reasons let others who are passionate about that field of work to get a chance of enrolling…..instead of being selfish and engage in something you’re not interested with…being there only to ill treat others…?!! Damn Shame…..!!!

  28. The parent must sue the government for being rejected health care rights. Its your right to get health care from government. Then the government will deal with those implemented in this saga. Lack of employment people are doing nursing not with passion but for salary. So to those who are not ready to work must piss off the ministry. If you can investigate you will find out that they is a lot happening there. Its better for those who have money to go for private health care. But to ordinary citizens some die in hospitals not that they were suppose to die but negligence by these evil people.

  29. The word NURSE is not just a name but it’s got meanings, sometimes if u don’t know why u r there for,u will be treating fellow women harshly, let’s wait for the government

  34. Dont be pissed at all nurses, we have some which are kind-hearted they dont deserve those “f*ck u” words. The nurses who did must be punished

  35. If u are not kind hearted pliz don’t do nursing, leave nursing for beautiful hearted pple. Why didn’t u apply and do policing to chase thieves.?

  36. The main problem in Malawi is that there are many backdoors that are always open to the rich and the well-known. This leaves those that had the sincere passion for the profession unconsidered for the training but allows the wicked ones into those nursing schools and we are therefore unsurprised to have this. Malawi will never be cured.

    1. 101% bro, Look at our university and collage entry processes its a shame to the poor who have the desire to do the job. The rich continue getting richer n the poor misonzi yokhayoka yosatha
