Rwandans living in Malawi are reported to be snubbing a call to go back to their home country following an announcement to have all Rwandan refugees return home.

Reports reveal that 400 Rwandan refugees have expressed interest to be repatriated against 9000 refugees who are reported to be living in Malawi.

Authorities suggest that many refugees are not willing to go back due to fear of being prosecuted for their role in Rwandan genocide.

Rwandan Ministry of disaster management and refugees announced that all refugees need to go back home as their refugee status is to be removed after the December deadline.

The ministry also warned that international organizations are to stop providing humanitarian support to the Rwandans after the due date.

Authorities from Rwanda have since urged citizens to acquire proper documents to support their stay in the host countries.

  1. There’s a normal process and procedure that is followed among the govt hosting the refugees, their country of origin and UNHCR. If everything is set refugees don’t have a say, they simply get repatriated. No one is left behind. Mozambique, Malawi and UNHCR did that before in 1994.

  3. When Malawians came from exile, where did the start from;if I may ask the same question? Its Rwanda’s responsibility, not Malawi’s,to make sure their nationals are taken care of when they go back.

  7. They should go first and come again with a Rwandan passport, then they will be able to apply for a malawian citizen ship, as of now they should go back to their country first because there is peace now, and they must be reminded that they came here as refugees, and they did not use there passport by the time they were coming here, so if they really want to stay here in malawi then they should first go back to their country and come back here in a normal way with their Rwandani Passport then they will apply for citizenship, because now we don’t recognise them as malawians, we recognise them as Rwandans who came here as refugees, and they can not even register as Malawians, they can not even hold a Malawian National ID Card!
