PP/DPP alliance defeats 50+1

As reports that ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) intends to merge with People’s Party (PP) are rife, lawmakers of the former ruling party joined DPP Members of Parliament (MPs) in shooting down the electoral reforms bills in Parliament.

The MPs blocked the Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Government Amendments Bill.

The bill proposes the election of the president, councillors and MPs using the 50+1 percent system.

Parliament
PP MPs join 50+1 bill denial.

It was rejected when a motion was put to the House to allow Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Samuel Tembenu read it for the second time.

Legislators on the government side supported by some PP MPs voted against second reading while most opposition MPs voted yes to the motion. At the end the motion was defeated by 97 to 62 votes.

A viral post indicating voting results show that almost all PP lawmakers rejected the bill. Only three MPs, vocal Kamlepo Kalua, Ralph Jooma and Roy Kachale were not present in the August House.

This is after news has been making rounds that the DPP is seeking the hand of PP ahead of the 2019 elections.

At the moment, unverified claims indicate that PP MPs were paid up to MK250,000 for making this stand.
The DPP is however yet to respond to these rumours.

The DPP is being accused of working tirelessly to suppress the bills under the electoral reforms bills as proposed by a special law commission.

  1. This is very good as people now are able to know the true colours of these three parties. Onse akhala m’boma ndipo akhala akunena za zoipa za wina at the end akupanga mgwirizano. Malawians are being taken for granted but they will speak out one day.

  2. Hahahahaha they discuss this privately before presenting those bills in parliament. This alliance is up to something, just waite and see what will happen 2019

  3. Watch out guyz when commenting we are after seeing a beautiful future for malawi. Let me give you a picture here bingu was worse than pp, amayi anangolakwitsa ndi cashgate koma things would have changed for better. Now this time let’s not smile at dpp akupwetekani seriously

    1. cash gate ndiye kulakwiskotu man. kulakwisa kwanji komwe mmakufuna?.mind you politics is a dirty game dont finally judge.

  4. this bill is for the benefit of Malawians but there is misunderstanding cz other parties are thinking that the amendment of 50+1 bill is their to undertake authorities, take note of this, if the bill pass, it will exist to the next generation but because of greedy to goverment seats thats why other authorities disagree to the amendment…Malawi need a change in all sphere !!!

  5. They are two sides of this issue:
1.PAC wants to try to usher their brethren Rev into gvt as President through dubious ways.
2.The forcing of Govt and Parliament to table and pass the bill brings more questions than ans.
-hence it looks like targetting an individual since elections are around the corner.
    Tichenjere aMalawi.

  6. Malawi will never improve coz of stupidt politics we have zowona kumatnyadila alliance ya DPP n PP this r the same pipo sude to hate each other ndekuti amayi mlandu sayimbidwatu salowanso boma malawi sazatheka

  8. It give you how Malawian politicians their brains work. They live for now not for the country future. How wise you see them, how many books they engulfed but they are still in premitive age. Now don’t trust them for the Future you are own your own.

  9. Good alliance.Continue for the good of all Malawians.
Mr Levi Kalitsilo had a post on this so called 50+1.Many commented on that nagatively and positively as well.I remember someone labelling me as a retrogressive thinker, luckly the presenter came to my rescue and was silenced immediately. My question is now,’ who Im I ?Those who know me,can answer this item in no time at all.But others can as well get it right.
Becarefull, this government is full of intelligent people and can win with land slide victory. They go according to plans. With PP coming to their allience will mean reapting that land slide victory because these were the same members that made it.People will vote for these mps because they have shown their maturity indeed.
PAC is our religious body that speak for us always and everyone and all is sure that it will accept the will of the people through their mps.We respect and we shall continue to respect our PAC.

  12. That is wisdom and intelligence. Keep it up! Simple majority is good for Malawi. It is impoverished state, that borrows money and asks for donations for any peace of work in the village. Look at our communities. They always go to vote, vote for their candidate, have you seen them going to court to complain? They continue with their local food, kholowa, limanda, kazota, chigwada and life continues. It is politician who complains against another.

    7. This bill is nothing to poor Malawians and the opposition are just pushing it to get into government easily and after attaining that they won’t do anything to you who supported them thru the bill.

  18. When Party leaders have court cases to answer their Parties will always sacrifice the greater good for the sake of protecting the leaders. We have seen it in UDF where the party has not been free to express its voice on topical issues…and now its the PP…..going the same route as the UDF.

  19. KENAKO TIKUMVA KUTI MCP IKULOWA KU BOMA LOLAMULA DZIKO LAMALAWI NDI LALING’ONO TIKAONETSA MIKWIYO NALO LITIKWIILA NDITHU. TIKADIKILA ZOTI TIDZAPANGA CHITUKUKO CHIKADZALOWA CHIPANI CHATHU NDIYE MPAKA YESU ADZATSIKA MUKUDIKILABE.

    1. Chisale, ithink you have lost direction.Pac drafted these 6 bills including 50+1 even before peter takeover the office of the presdent. What malawians are suprising is; in time of jb,pac were there with those bills but they didn't say anything. Now,peter came, they have started matukutuku which means akungodana ndi banja la muthalika basi.Ali ndi zipan zawo zomwe amakwera kuma sidzimakondedwa ndi amalawi. So they are trying to use the name of malawian as their wepeon kufuna kulanda boma mwaupandu.Nditsiku liti lomwe amulomole ndi gulu lawo anapita kumidzi nkumakatumidwa ndi anthu osauka kuti akufuna 50+1? 1. There are many bills that can help poor Malawians directly but the opposition cud not press the government to table them now coz they know if those are passed Government would be applauded, instead akulimbana ndi bills they know Govrnmnt wont allow so that apange gain popularity. This whole thing is political n wont help poor Malawians even with 50+ votes law Ruling parties will be still Rigging.

  22. Mukachotsa “D” mupeza PP. Mukaonjezera “D” mupeza DPP.
Morale of this is DPP and PP ndi ana a UDF. That is why this country if failing to move forward, UDF akuyimba belo ali pa kariyala.

  23. Kodi mwayiwala kale, UDF, DPP and PP ndi chinthu chimodzi. Zonsezi zinachitika chifukwa cha Bingu.
