New Chichewa bible launched in Mzuzu

South African based organization, the Christian Media Publication (CMP), on Tuesday launched a new Chichewa Bible called “Mawu a Mulungu mu Chichewa cha Lero” in Mzuzu.

Translation of the Bible took almost 30 years and was done by a team of Malawians.

Bishop Gibson Nachiye one of the pastors who translated the bible.

The Mzuzu launch was aimed at sensitizing the bible users of the impending grand contemporary bible launch to be held in Lilongwe.

During the event, South African Susan Van der Schijff analysed the New English Bible version while Bishop Gibson Nachiye analysed the Chichewa version.

Country representative for the organisation Chikondi Chikoya said this bible is so different and special since it was made so that people should understand Chichewa bible.

“This bible is in Chichewa that is being spoken today in our homes that’s why it is called Chichewa cha Lero.  Even though there are other vernacular bibles, you will see some people carrying English bibles because they don’t understand some words in the old Chichewa bibles,” said Chikoya.

Chikoya added that this doesn’t mean that people should stop reading other bibles but it will depend on how one understands its words.

Similar events were also held in Lilongwe and Blantyre.  On 17th November, there will be a national launch.

  5. These so called ” humans errors” was it done or came from Jesus himself or by the Scribes? How can two people speak two different issues but the meaning will be the same? Did Jesus spoke two different issues but the meanings came to be the same? This word:” Mu Chichewa chalero”, what exactly means? Or it means : Mu Chichewa chakale mawu omwewo pakali pano akuthanthauza zina? Please who is fooling who here? Or it means Jesus was lying or the Scribes or his disciples?
Please can someone explain to me?

  6. Get the point straight here people of God. This is not politics that u should criticise the work of people of God here. The old Chichewa bible was very complicated one. They could not say things straight forward. I’m a real chewa speaking man. I knew this years ago that the translators of the old chewa bible were not serious and were just chance takers and not the real chewa indeginant geniuses.

I’m looking forward to seeing the new translation and have a test of it. Many people commenting here do not even read the bible but they just like stories and critising things they don’t know. This is not about Pitala Muntharika or whatsoever u are obsessed wth. Leave bible things to us the children of God. This is our field and we are proud of the new development in the gospel industry.

He has on countless occasions after curing patients presented lab results both positive and negative, together with the cured person. with joy in my heart i will like to inform the general public. i never knew there was a cure to HIV until my sister was cured from the virus after four years of battling the virus with ARV. She took his herbal medicine for a month and some weeks and when she went for a test and she was diagnosed to be negative. you can contact the doctor on WhatsApp or call +2348147299781

  18. South Africa is much better in chewa than our own original Malawian Chewa’s.Funny funny people are Malawians.YOU accept everything just because it is from outside without a second thought. What’s wrong with the old versions we’ve had?Malawi you better watch before you become Malawi A Moto komanso chenjerani ndi mipingo tikubwera kumene iti tangoti mbweee m’matown umu ndi ngozi

  19. The Bible is translated by humans, who can make mistakes. I think they are always trying to get as close as their knowledge allows it, to the original. That may be why a new translation has been done. Nothing should ever be added or removed, though! Just language can be improved.

    1. Yes, that is true. That is why sometimes two people will relate the same story and will stress different things. But we believe that they were inspired by God Himself . I believe that if we read our Bible with a prayerful mind and ask God to speak to us through His word, the true meaning will find us, no matter how many human errors are made.

    1. The work has taken 30 yyyys to conclude. This, if we are to take Chiwoko seriously, makes the ‘Bible’ in question already outdated…

Paul’s and others concerns are valid. By removing ‘outdated’ words and by bringing ‘up to date’ words, meanings are lost in between. This is exactly why similar verses of different versions of Bibles don’t agree…

In the end, truth becomes obscure. Pple follow what the think is right and the nation goes astray…

    2. I tell you language changes. And I tell you we have people who don’t understand the Chichewa used in other Chichewa versions.

Let’s take example of Psalm 121:1 which says “I lift mu eyes to the mountains, where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of the universe and the earth”.

In the old Chichewa Bible phrase “my help comes from” is translated as “Thandizo langa lidzera”. For the new generation, the word “lidzera” means passes through like Thandizo likuchokera kwina ndikudzera kwa Yehova before coming to you. But is the message there like this that our help passes through the Lord when it comes to us, no. It is just because in those days “kudzera” meant “comes from” but in our days “comes from” is understood as ” kuchokera” while “kudzera” as “passes through”.

The issue is the “target group”. The older generation has no problem understanding the old Chichewa version but I tell you many young people flock to English versions not because they like English than Chichewa but because they can’t understand the Chichewa version.
      #no_version_is_outdated.

  24. ku #M’poto kwavuta paja mumati ndi inu ophunzira paja eetii!!? komatu chomwe muziwe #Bushiri wanuyo akukulondolerani ku Gahena wa muyaya. nanga why mwafikira pochitira mwano #Yehova pofuna kusintha mawu ake! kodi mesa amati mawu a#Mlengiyu sasitha!!!? #Atumbuka mwatani kodi? inutu ndinu mukutibweresera mavuto mziko muno cz mukumaputa dala mkwiyo wa #Mulungu zosatira zake tikumalangika dziko lonse muno mmalawi.

    1. Bushiri has nothing to do with problems facing Malawi. Malawi has never been in peace economically, now you’ve created yourselves the so called bloodsuckers you don’t even know whom to blame. Stop blaming the Tumbuka’s for your problems rather blame those in government, in the north we’re pushing ourselves the government doesn’t think of the north.

    1. Language is a living thing. It’s dynamic. Linguists will agree that every 2 decades every human language changes – adding new words and removing other words. How Chewa language was spoken in 1900 is different from today. Bible Translators work hard to bring the message of the BibLe in a way that people understand without using dictionaries. The Chichewa you speak today will differ with the Chichewa which will be spoken in the next fifty years. The message of the BibLe is the same but language changes. If yuo are not okay with translations then I advise that you buy a Hebrew Old Testament and Greek New Testament Bibles so that you read what the original writers wrote. But as long as you use other languages you will never find a perfect translation. Each translation has problems.

    2. Who wrote the “Bible” or who translated KjV? I’m not understanding the Qn bro. If it’s who wrote the Bible then I would answer in this way:

The Bible was written by many authors who lived in different times, spoke different languages – Hebrew for Old Testament writers and Greek for New Testament writers – in different worlds of different social, political, economic and religious atmospheres. Christians confess that these writers were inspired by the Holy Spirit when they were writing the Bibles.

Have I answered the right Qn or not?

    3. Yea u hav answerd bro 2timothy 3v16 Now ar you tryn to tell me that the chewa we ar using there ar some pipo somewere as were Malawi is Concerned who gat problem in understanding it?if yes Then that is the reason why we hav teachers?am sure is not the ideal of removing some words in it God will punish you.

    4. You talk of KjV you need to know that not all people have knowledge of English and this Chichewa version targets such people and those who have problems understanding old Chichewa Bibles.

    5. I sayd thus why we hav go these teachers to Xplain to those who ar not able to understand those versions:You ar sounding and coming out veri well bro BUT SOME HOW YOU WANT TO DISTORT THE MESSAGE.i gat no scale to judge you wat i can encourage you bro is to read the bible between its line These other versions bro ONLY God knows How i long to hav that bible here in Zambia i wud feel gret

    6. All in all those people were inspired by the spirit of God and you just wake up in the morning with yo bad dreams and decide to start edidting the Holly book of God Revelation 22v18-19 readit on your own

    1. Not all people can read KJV coz not all people know how to read English. Again the English of KjV is very archaic for young generations to understand. The message of the BibLe is the same but language changes. If yuo are not okay with translations then I advise that you buy a Hebrew Old Testament and Greek New Testament Bibles so that you read what the original writers wrote. But as long as you use other languages you will never find a perfect translation. Each translation has problems.

  25. Mwayamba misalano ,tsopano ndiye chiani tsopano mukungo tenga nazo tembelelo ndi mkwiyo wa yehova, ngati ili misala thamangani Ku mento hospital. 1. Humans can make mistakes, those who did the KJV might have too. Remember, the original was written in a language none of us ordinary people understand. Therefore translations, which make mistakes possible. BUT it could never be okay to add or remove anything!!!

    2. Friend you need to know that language is a living thing. It’s dynamic. Linguists will agree that every 2 decades every human language changes – adding new words and removing other words. 3. Thanks brotherman for understanding this it really means alot to me. do you know that all these new bible versions have t removed 17 complete verses? and have removed 64000 words? If you have a new bible version take your trustworthy King James Bible and compare. Mathew ; 17;21, 18;11, 23;14, Mark; 7;16, 9;44, 46, 11;26, 15:28, Luke; 17:36, 23:17, john; 5:4, 7:53 to chapter 8:1–11, acts; 8:37, 15:34, 24:7, 28:29 and romans 16:24. these are the verses they removed check for yourself bra. The devil is a liar and is based on deception remember is the father of all lies. inbox me for more

    4. The missing verses are incorporated in the Mawu a Mulungu mu Chichewa Chalero.
I have read the work. It’s very nice translation. You talk of KjV you need to know that not all people have knowledge of English and this Chichewa version targets such people and those who have problems understanding old Chichewa Bibles. I tell you language changes.

Let’s take example of Psalm 121:1 which says “I lift mu eyes to the mountains, where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of the universe and the earth”.

    5. Friends its very very easy to deceive a person than to convince him that he is being decieved, you need to know your enemy, knowing an enemy is half a battle. 2 Corinthians 2:11, Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not igniting of his devices. 2 Corinthian 4:4, In whom the god of this world official blinded the minds office them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious Gospelers of Christ who is the image of God should unto them. 2 Corinth 11:2–4, 2 Corinth 11:13–15, Ephesians 5:11 read for yourself. Im not trying to be unkind here, you need to know that there approximately 400 bible translations in English alone, why? why? MB Chiwoko? The devil is corrupting the word of God

    6. I cannot answer why we have all the 400 versions because each version is produced for a purpose. But to simplify the issue, I would say the different versions are produced due to the changes that happen in the languages we speak. At the same time the spoken English differs from country to country. For instance, the NIV has one for those who speaks American English and another for those who speak British English. Those who speak American English have problems understanding British English – vice-verse. And even those who speak British English will tell you that the English of KjV is not used not. Can u tell me do you use the “thee, thou, doeth, cometh” in your English?

Know that the changes that happen in our languages will make the Bible versions to change their languages also to make sense to the audience.

    7. If you truly belive in The Most My Brother MB Chiwoko, why would they remove these verses? 17 complete verses, why? Have you read Revelation 22:18? Or let me remind you, For i testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, if any man shall #add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that written in this book; ignorances 19, And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. Can you please read John 1:1 from these english new translation bibles and see how devil has attacked the word of God and the take your KJV and compare

    8. My Brother MB im very happy for what we have shared i really appreciate it but you please inbox me your WhatsApp number so that we can share more that is if you’re on WhatsApp and if you’re interested. Thanks so much for your time Brother MB Chiwoko

  27. I hope it’s not diluted knowing South Africans with their devilish rights, they can twist original mazyu ya chiuta to accommodate homosexuals!! We’ve always had a Chewa and nyanja Bible in RCZ Zambia since my Sunday school days, who told them Chewa or Nyanja has changed????

    1. The south africans were just involved in publishing and printing process – that is the Christian Media Publishing -. But the work was done by Malawian experts with knowledge Chichewa, English, Hebrew and Greek languages. They worked under the International Bible Society.

    2. Nobody has rights when it comes to changing the Bible. It is God’s word. There are people who claim their devilish rights in every part of the world, here too, on every level of society. And sadly, many diluted or mangled versions of the Bible have been published by different sects. Things get added or removed, which could never be right. Let’s rather pray that God will help those trying to give us His word in the best language, to really translate it the way He meant it to be. We don’t like things to change, especially not the wording of verses we’ve known by heart all our lives. However, sometimes it is possible to find words that are closer to the original and is it not so that we truly want to hear God’s original message in our own language? Let’s not generalise and start calling people names. Let’s rather pray that God will help us hear exactly what He wants us to hear when reading His word. We forget how blessed we are to have the word of God in our mother tongues!

    3. God bless you Joy DuToit le Roux, we need more of your calliber, give that old time religion,/Christianity of real salvation, it’s good enough for me!!?
