The demonstrations against gender based violence seem to not have done much except attract attention.

Mangochi Police station is keeping in custody Saizi Kanjinga aged 48 for killing his wife over family issues.

LilongweMangochi deputy police spokesperson Amina Daudi said the suspect murdered his 52-year-old wife Magret Balakasi of Ntongole village, Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi.

According to Daudi, on September 3, 2017 the couple were having supper but suddenly started quarrelling over family issues.

In the process the suspect angrily hit his wife with two blows on the head, as a result she fell on the ground whilst shouting for help.

The man ran away, leaving the woman unconscious with a deep cut on the forehead.

“She was later rushed to Mangochi district hospital by her relatives but was pronounced dead upon arrival,” Daudi told Malawi24.

Postmortem conducted at the same hospital revealed that death was due to head injuries.

After being on the run for two days, the suspect handed himself over to Police and confessed to have committed the crime.

Meanwhile, the man has been charged with murder for contravening section 209 of the penal and will appear before court soon.
