Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Malawi Chapter has asked government to start barring ruling party supporters from attending presidential press briefings.

MISA Malawi chairperson Teresa Ndanga made the plea during   commemoration of International Right to Know Day on Thursday at Bingu International Conference Centre (BICC) in the capital city, Lilongwe. The day is commemorated on September 28 every year.

Ndanga: They threaten journalists

In her remarks, Ndanga said Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) supporters who attend press conferences prohibit journalists from conducting their duties.

“We have seen journalists being threatened after asking crucial questions,” she said.

On the Right to Know Day, Ndanga said the day was very important for Malawi and the media. She then urged government to allow the Malawi Human Rights Commission, which promotes people’s rights, to work independently on any issue affecting the public at large.

Guest of honour at the event, Information Minister Nicholas Dausi, said the involvement of many institutions in   commemorating the International Right to Know Day in Malawi shows that the country has made improvements in ensuring right to information.

“This signifies that as a country, we are making great strides in the promotion of the right to information and right to access to information.

“We have also made good progress in promoting freedom of expression, freedom of opinion and freedom of the media to publish freely in the country,” he said.

  2. Last year, you the same people in media especially the so called “private media” gave an empty threat to the President HE Prof APM and his cabinet that “you were to give him and his DPP Government “black out” this your empty, stupid and useless threat goofed because you knew that it was not going to work because you would have lost business because it is the president and cabinet that make news and today you want the DPP to bar it’s own supporters from attending the Presidential press conferences, you see how useless our media has become in Malawi, you are forgetting that Malawi is a political government and APM is a political leader who has a party and supporters the best thing you can do is for you people in media to stop attending the press conference and let us see if the president will not communicate to the Malawians. After all MISA Malawi is always biased towards the opposition so it makes no difference whether you attend or not.

  11. I thought MISA should be in front to promote freedom of association bt at least we the party supporters we must know how to be behave in important things we don’t have to politicise everything

  14. these cadets, amakataniko as if ofusa ndi iwowo, they insult jounalists they dont deserve to be there, azipezeke ku masintha ground kumsonkhano wa dpp basi.

  15. Freedom to associate imafunika kudziwaso udindo posaphwanila ena ufulu these kind of people sometimes they feel peter is only father for the them foggeting he is the father for all nation maybe MiSA yawona umbuli mwa anthuwo popanga zinthu zozikonda

    1. Kugunata kosadziwa boma komaso chipani nkumeneku. Kumafusa kuti boma ndi chani nanga chipani ndi chani . Boma silimatha koma chipani chimatha.

  16. MISA yabalarikanso? It means muli MISA yonse ndi mbuli zokhazokha? Ukuganiza mwa upubwa uku? MISA must involve lawyers b4 showing ignorance

    1. Don’t be surprised with Kaombe’s comment, this guy is a senior cadet. This is why he is delibarately dont want to understand the important of their stay away at this press breifing.

  17. Am not amused. Those cadets made Theresa Ndanga weep during the previous UNGA briefing. She will fight hard to keep them out. But the question is: Will she manage to achieve the same? Let’s wait and see .

  18. how about their freedom of association inline of malawi constitution? Do Misa malawi chapter aware of this? MISA MALAWI, Please ask lawyers if you have to guide u in this complex mattter.

    1. what about the journalist’s respect, do they need to be insulted by the party supporters. by the way get this right, freedom of association applies on right places e.g dpp supporters should associate where there is a dpp rally, no problem, but not when the president is briefing to the whole nation. thats public not for dpp.

    2. Mr chisale, partly i may agree with u but u hav to know that freedom of association is supposed to be enjoyed by every person regardless of where u are & which function. i can intirely agree with u if the headline would be MISA asked party supporters to be calm when conducting breifing with party leaders. this shud not be applied to only HE but even to opposition coz they have also their supporters.

    3. Mr Dip, sometimes it depends. There are other supporters who are civilised and they can even control their fellow supporters and this happen to many parties in malawi. The best way to avoid this is practising clean politics and lets avoid castigating politics.

    4. Mr kachimanga, do the journalists castigate the party leaders during the press breifing? And why do the party supporters especially DPP Cadets insult journalists?

    5. #Mr kachimanga can you answer #donton here or else we should agree that if they want to be there asamavale ndikuimba zachipani then i’ll agree that they are expressing the freedom of association you are saying.

    6. And Journalists represent ordinary Malawians and nation as awhole regardless of political differences, asking the views of the leader matters. This is smart time for smart people not yavi yavi palipose mumabore you are little profit to us. All you do is provokative remarks out of mouth.MISA not wrong at all.
